Rock music artist, CharlesRiver!
Where did you grow up? Still growing up and started in Boston.
What inspired you to get into music? My family was full of musicians, two pianos in the living room. My mother taught forty students piano per week at the house. Ed Sullivan, Shindig were weekly TV shows that had music from everywhere. Both of my siblings played piano, even my father would slowly analyze pieces and attempt to play them. The older sibling was also a great guitar player.
I carried my transistor radio everywhere, delivering newspapers around my neighborhood, bouncing between WRKO and WMEX. I snuck my transistor radio into bed and scanned the dial until I fell asleep. One glorious nite, I heard a sound that really got my young senses reeling: Johann Sebastian Bach organ music. Although my music path has gone through many great re-inventions and inspirations, that moment stands out as most poignant.
Do you write and produce music? Yes!
What is a recording session like for you? It's all about creating the sound I hear, and picking up on any fortunate mishaps that sound good.
Did you take guitar lessons or are you self-taught? Initially yes, guitar lessons. Now my teacher is Johann Sebastian Bach.
What is your local music scene like right now in Cambridge? Quieter than it was, but there are many great songwriters and players here .
Do you collaborate with other artists? When inspired, yes, and only then.
Have you done some touring in your career? Yes!
Tell us about your latest project. Right now I'm sorting the catalog that I've generated for decades and looking into licensing some of it. And as always going deeper into the sound that is music.
What can we expect from you in the future? I will win a Grammy, and when on stage to accept it, I will tear open my shirt revealing a JS Bach t-shirt to remind the world we live on, that this Gent is the Map. Also, that I will continue, no matter what, to feel and listen to, music.
